ESPN Vice President Rob King has been fired after being accused of sexual harassment, according to reports from The New York Post.
The allegations and crimes were not specified, but they did pertain to social media posts that were brought to the attention of ESPN’s human resources department. When the New York Post reached out to King and ESPN for comments, both declined.
“After nearly 20 years with ESPN, I have decided the time is right for me to leave the company. I’m looking forward to spending more time with my family and friends, and wish the company continued success,” King said in a Tweet Tuesday.
This is a pretty… PR-friendly quote. I would guess that he wasn’t the one “deciding to leave” the company, and he probably doesn’t “wish the company continued success”.
ESPN is in the midst of a company-wide layoff of employees. King’s firing is not associated with these layoffs.
King was the head of SportsCenter at 6 pm for several years. He also ran ESPN.com. Along with these tasks, King was also the executive at large for special projects and gave direct reports to ESPN’s Chairman Jimmy Pitaro. It can’t be overstated how important King’s role was with the company. So, ESPN VP to get fired he must’ve done something pretty bad, but that’s only speculation.
King also ran the “Inclusive Content Committee”, which was “a team with a core mission to enhance storytelling on all ESPN platforms by serving as a diverse resource for the company’s content creators.” according to King’s ESPN bio.
It’s tough to have an opinion on these types of stories. Especially when we don’t know the full extent of the charges.
